Spring has sprung! — and while this season is one of rebirth and all things new and exciting, it can be tricky to navigate finding outfits we feel confident in as we enter the warmer months. As someone who prefers “cold weather fashion” so I’m able to cover up my insecurities, the Spring/Summer season tends to be a challenging hurdle that I’m never fully prepared to tackle when April rolls around. Having been stuck in this vicious cycle year after year, I’ve collected some valuable tips to keep in mind as I continue to develop my personal style and grow my wardrobe.

Number one: Spring cleaning. You haven’t worn that two piece set once in your life. Bye! Get rid of it. I know it sucks that you spent the money on something that still has the tag on after two years, but that’s a surefire way of knowing you don’t feel confident in it. You wear your clothes — the clothes don’t wear you. Get your shit on Poshmark or drop them off at your local Goodwill. Or, if you have the time, plan a little closet sale/shopping event!

Number two: invest in basics…quality tank tops, an everyday blouse, the perfect pair of jeans, a new pack of socks etc. I truly look to my girlfriends to hold me to this. Like, no Molly…you don’t need that slip dress — you just counted yesterday and have 26 others. Same thing goes for purses. My new rule of thumb is that anytime I’m itching to buy a new bag or slip dress, I have to vow to get rid of one already in my collection. This has been a helpful practice so far. Pretty much every time I’m on the fence, I rarely regret not buying that piece I was convinced I needed at the time. If you’re still thinking about it a week later, go back and buy it.

Number three: more is more. I mean this in terms of accessories. Experiment with stacking necklaces. Tie a ribbon in your hair or around a belt loop. Try out a new eyeshadow look. Elevate your everyday basics by sporting a novelty bag. Use your Spring cleaning money to get that arm tattoo you’ve wanted for years. I’ve recently come to the conclusion that no matter what I’m eating or what I’m doing in the gym, my arms will never look the way I want them to…like Kaia Gerbers. Or any of those models for that matter. That being said, having a pretty tattoo to look down at and admire could be a game changer, if that’s your thing.

And yes — you can pull off red lipstick. Not being able to pull something off is just a mindset 99% of the time. Maybe 100% of the time…I haven’t decided.

Shown above are three of my go-to “outfit formulas” for the warmer months. I firmly believe that pretty much wherever you’re going, you can make one of these bases work for the occasion, especially when you’re in a pinch. For example, I find that look one is perfect for a coffee run or lunch date, whereas look two can be a more elevated alternative, but also works for dinner. I personally like to reserve look three for all daytime activities, such as running errands, going for a long walk or for a visit to the park with some friends. My new favorite pastime is to take long walks in fancy neighborhoods to look at houses I’ll never be able to afford. I feel all of these outfits are suitable for something of that sort.

Remember — brownie points for accessories! None of these looks would be fully complete without the perfect jewelry, hair ribbons, statement bag or sunglasses. Wear the bold lipstick. Trim your bangs.
